What inspired you to start in real estate and how did you motivate yourself to keep going?
I have always been drawn to architectural design and from an early age aspired own my own business, so it was only natural that I started my real estate career within months of moving to Austin 8 years ago. Today, I am honored to call Austin my home and find myself falling in love this city more and more each day. From beautiful green spaces to diverse design, Austin has something to offer and inspire everyone. However, there is nothing more inspiring than seeing peoples’ faces light up when I open the door to a home and we all realize that we’ve found “the one”. Those are the moments I live for and makes all the bumps in the road worth it.
What should other real estate entrepreneurs reading this be focusing on to expand their own business?
Advice I received a long time ago was to be long-term greedy. Those three words are constantly in the back of my mind and continue to shape my focus on always doing what is in the best interest of the client; not what is in my best interest in the moment, and in doing so it has come back to me 10 fold. Sometimes, it may be what loses me the listing that day, but the sellers remember that I was looking out for them and not just looking to make my next commission. As such, over 70% of my business is based on referrals and repeat clients.
How has social media and online marketing affected your real estate business? How much more success have you had now after implementing social media and online marketing efforts?
Social media has been critical in allowing me to stay connected to my network and in turn, growing my group of clients and friends authentically. Platforms like Instagram allow me to get a glimpse in to the lives of my clients, and allows people to see what my world is like when I am not on the phone about a house or a contract. These small windows in to each other’s lives adds a much needed human element to a distant digital world we have come to operate in. My Instagram (@wadeatx) is a mix of my personal life, my animals (my 2 rescue pups and 2 horses), and of course, real estate.
How did you build your team?
My first hire was my operations and administrative help. I needed that leverage to help grow the business in s streamlined and systematic way while I was working with clients. They are fully licensed for when I need that help, and have subsequently helped with the hiring process for the rest of the licensees on the team.
What do you consider the main differences between those people who have been successful in your industry and those who have failed?
I believe one of the major components to agents who are successful in the business is that they care deeply about the relationships they build, not only with clients, but also other professionals in this business. There are countless times when cultivating a relationship with another agent has actually been to a client’s benefit later on. We are all working together even though it seems like we are opposing each other sometimes, so remembering that at the end of the day, we work for our clients but with our fellow agents can make or break your business.
Final Thoughts
Social media has put so much emphasis on the need to appear “perfect” for your followers, but I have found that allowing yourself to be vulnerable and honest is what we are all craving from one another. At the end of the day, we’re all humans just trying to do the best we can with the resources we have, so let’s be kind to one another – it’s so much easier to live that way.
